2008 Thomas Paine Birthday Celebrations

As part of our continued promotion of our We the People Bookshelf: Pursuit of Happiness gifted to us by the National Endowment for Humanities and the American Library Association, the Redondo Beach Public Library will celebrate Thomas Paine's birthday in grand style!

At 6pm, readers of all ages are invited to join us for birthday cake, punch, balloons, bookmarks, a read-aloud and pictures with Uncle Sam & Betsy Ross!

Following the family-style birthday party, a public reading of Walt Whitman's In Memory of Thomas Paine and selections from Thomas Paine's Common Sense will begin at 7pm. An open discussion on reform, free thought and polictical action will continue until 8pm.

This event it free and open to the public. No registration or sign-up requred. Attendees may attend all or part of the event, depending on age and interest.

This event is scheduled a bit earlier than Tom's actual birth date in order to include University of Wisconsin Professor Harvey Kaye as our speaker. Professor Kaye is the author of THOMAS PAINE AND THE PROMISE OF AMERICA. The birthday celebration will include a buffet dinner, Tom Paine birthday cake along with Professor Kaye's discussion of Tom Paine. Ticket prices are $15. All proceeds will go towards the erection of a Tom Paine statue in Monument Park in Fort Lee. Checks can be made out to theTom Paine Statue / VFW Account and mailed to:

Proceeds from this worthy event will help the Spokane Chapter of the Progressive Democrats of America in Common Sense effort to promote The Rights of Man during this Crisis and the celebrants will enjoy an evening of fun, merriment, and a no-host bar.
